Frank “Sam” Shoemaker

Frank “Sam” Shoemaker, formerly of McCall, passed away July 11, 2012, in Boise following a history of heart disease.

A private gathering with family was held at the Tracyton Cemetery, where he was laid to rest next to his daugher, Jolene, who died in 2009.

A memorial service will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at Bear Creek Lodge in McCall.

Sam was born March 2, 1941, to Clarence & Alma Shoemaker in Fairfield, Iowa.

In 19 the family relocated to Bremerton, Wash., where he remained until the mid-1990s. He moved to Seattle, where he was employed at Seattle Truck Repair until his retirement.

He then relocated to McCall, where he became lead trail groomer continuing his hobby, passion and love of snowmobiling.

During Sam’s years of service and volunteering in McCall he enjoyed working with others to teach them about the equipment and detailed servicing of all the trail groomers from Cascade, Donnelly and McCall.

He was always willing to slow down and explain or teach someone. His ability to track on a problem, analyze it and draw on his career in large equipment repair to get things back up and running will be greatly missed.

It was often Sam who would shuttle drivers to equipment at all hours of the night or spend a day tracking down parts and then going out and getting things installed to have a groomer make a run the next night.

Sam often traveled under the radar of others but it was Sam that picked up the slack when things needed a boost, all in the interest in making someone else’s snowmobiling trip a better experience.

Sam was preceded in death by his daughter, Jolene, in 2009.

Survivors include two daughters Janiece Chipman (Mel) and Audra Pansa (Brian); five grandchildren, Karie, Karryn, Stephen, Kelsie, Brianna; eight great-grandchildren, all of Bremerton; his companion, Lyla Sorenson of McCall; a brother, Joe A. Shoemaker; sisters Shirley Howerton and Kim Quick of Bremerton and Dee Petersen of Colorado; son-in-law Mark Mills; his extended family; and of course his best pal Zeus.
