Ryan T. Flegal

Ryan T. Flegal, 35, of La Grande, Ore., and formerly of McCall, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Clearfield, Penn., with the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Rupp and Pastor Debra Rogosky co-officiating. Interment was in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde, Penn.

A social will take place in McCall on Saturday March 3, at 5 p.m., at the Salmon River Brewery located at 300 Colorado Street. This will be a casual event for friends and loved ones to gather and share their memories of Ryan.

He was born on Dec. 23, 1976, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., the son of Richard L. Flegal, of Hollidaysburg, Penn., and Deborah L. (Nelson) Michuck, of Penfield, Penn.

Ryan was a graduate of the Clearfield Area High School and the Pennsylvania State University with an Associate Degree in Forest Technology. While in high school he was on the All-Star Soccer Team at Clearfield Senior High School and the North Star Soccer League.

He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Clearfield.

In 2003, Ryan moved from Clearfield to Salt Lake City, where he took a position as a Wild Fire Specialist with the Salt Lake County Hot Shot Crew.

He later relocated to McCall, where he was with the Idaho Hot Shots and trained as a Smokejumper. He last served as a Wild Fire Specialist and Crew Boss at the Salmon-Challis National Forest with the United States Forest Service.

Ryan loved the outdoors, hiking, camping, hunting, skiing, and snowboarding.

He is survived by his mother; his stepmother, Christine (Swistock) Flegal; his stepfather, Rick Michuck; a sister, Jennifer Horner and her husband Joshua; a nephew, Camden Horner, and two nieces Josie Ryan Horner and Ali Rose Horner, all of Salt Lake City.

Also surviving are his maternal grandfather, Rodney Nelson, of Princeton, N.C.; an uncle, Terry Nelson and his wife Tina and their two sons, Matt and David, all of California; an uncle Doug Knapp and two cousins, Doug, Jr. and Christopher of Florida and his girlfriend, Britney Gulick of Oregon.

Ryan was preceded in death by his biological father, Scott Knapp; his biological paternal grandmother, Verden Knapp-Smith, who was formally of Philipsburg, Penn.; paternal grandfather, Marion M. Flegal; paternal grandmother Beatrice L. Flegal; and maternal grandmother, Phyllis Sawyer.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Ryan’s Memorial Fund. Checks may be made payable to Richard L. Flegal or Deborah Michuck.
