Roberta Odell Gmirkin

Roberta Odell Gmirkin passed away peacefully in Boise on Nov. 3, 2012.

A memorial service will be held for Roberta and her husband, Leonard C. Gmirkin, who died on Oct. 20, 2012 at 1 p.m. for Friday Nov. 16, 2012 at Boise Funeral Home , Aclesa Chapel, 8209 W. Fairview Ave., Boise.

“Robin” as she was affectionately known by her many friends, was born in Akron, Ohio, on Jan. 9, 1934.

She went to school in Akron and lived there until she attended Purdue University. She received her degree in English literature and went on to get her master’s degree in Spanish.

She was hired by the Central Intelligence Agency and was working there when she met the love of her life, Leonard Gmirkin. They were married on Sept. 7, 1956, and then moved to Indonesia. Robin enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing tennis.

She had their first son, John, in 1959 and their second son, Keith, in 1961. Robin continued to work with the agency in Indonesia and in Laos but decided to enjoy their last posting in Singapore by shopping, playing tennis and spending time with her family and friends.

She was such a support to Len that he had her added to his Medal of Merit Award. They retired to McCall where she loved being involved with Rotary and the women’s auxiliary.

She continued to hunt and fish with Len until he had a stroke nine years ago. She then took over the role as his care-giver until she was diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

They moved to Boise in June 2011 to receive medical care and to spend as much time with their family as possible. She was one of the most reliably cheerful people and was loved by so many.

She is survived by her sons, John and Keith; her daughter-in-law, Cheryl, and her grandbabies Zada Revae and Vesper Sage; and her brother Chuck Klein.

Robin was a loving wife, an extraordinary mother and an amazing friend.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to www.nourishthechildren.com in the name of Leonard and Roberta Gmirkin. Please call the funeral home at (208) 322-2998 with questions or interest.
