Alice Ann Scully Riceci

Always we hope someone else has the answer.
Some other place will be better, some other time it will all turn out.
This is it. No one else has the answer.
No other place will be better, and it has already turned out.
At the center of your being you have the answer;
you know who you are and you know what you want.
- Lao Tzu

Alice Ann Scully Riceci, 65, died peacefully at home in her sleep in the early morning hours of Nov. 19, 2011, a short time after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

The family will hold a private burial service at Mountain View Cemetery in Pocatello followed by a celebration of her life on Jan. 7 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Idaho Botanical Garden in Boise.

Alice was born March 28, 1946, in New York City to Edward Charles Scully and Phyllis Andree Scully.

The daughter of a career naval officer, Alice attended schools in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Oahu, Hawaii; Morocco; and Whidbey Island, Wash., and graduated from Kingston (New York) High School in 1964.

A lifelong student, Alice attended numerous universities across the United States, including Cornell University, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UCLA in 1975 and a master’s degree in psychology from Antioch University in 1979.

For the next 30 years Alice dedicated her life to helping others as a crisis counselor and therapist.

Before opening her private counseling practice in Ketchum in 1991, Alice served as a clinical director for substance abuse programs in the Bay Area and the Wood River Valley, and performed crisis hotline work in Los Angeles and Ketchum.

Leaving private practice in 2001, Alice followed in her father’s footsteps and turned her attention to the world of publishing and photography.

She assisted her daughter in launching Sun Valley Art magazine in 1997, BOISE Magazine in 2000 and McCall Magazine in 2004.

Alice moved from the Wood River Valley to Boise in 2005 to pursue her career in publishing and photography full time.

In 2008 she met the love of her life at a photography exhibit in McCall. Alice and J. Patrick Riceci were married at the Shore Lodge in McCall on Oct. 3, 2010.

Together, they traveled to Italy and France to celebrate their respective 65th birthdays, taking photos and planning their retirement together in Patrick’s ancestral village in the Le Marche region of Italy.

The photographic legacy Alice leaves behind will serve as a visual testament to their joy together.

Alice is survived by her husband, J. Patrick Riceci; her daughter, Christine Ann Evangelides Dodd; her son-in-law, Bruce A. Dodd; her stepson, Brannon (Malisa) Riceci (Portland); and her sisters, Susan (Bill) Bernet (Nashville), Patricia Gardner (Los Angeles), and Elizabeth Scully (Melbourne, Florida); and her two sisters-in-law Bridget Riceci (David Byrne) (Tucson) and Shannon (Bill) Squires.

The family would like to thank St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute and in particular Dr. Steven Smith, the St. Luke’s Hospice Care team and Alice’s hospice care nurse, Linda Graham, for the care Alice received during her illness.
